BURGE, Maud

LIGGINS, Samuel Land

  • Christening: Dec 19, 1877, Coalville, England
  • Married: Shannon, New Zealand
  • Death: Jan 23, 1956, Palmerston North, New Zealand

   General Notes:

Sam was Joseph and Sarah's second son and apart from helping with the farm in the earlier years, was later involved in the running of the Ashlea Flax Mill.

He married Maud Burge of Tokomaru and had a family of four sons and seven daughters: Samuel, Russell, Joe, Oliver (deceased), Flo (Mrs Kelly), Gladys (Mrs F. Batchelor), Mary (Mrs Penfold), Ruth (Mrs Walsh), Alice (Mrs Lattigan), Margery (Mrs Eleveld), Peggy (Mrs Cran).

Local people will well remember Mrs Kelly and Mrs Batchelor who lived in Tokomaru for many year and possibly Mrs Cran who worked in Beggs Music Shop in Palmerston North.

From early days the family lived in the large house on the left of the main highway approximately 1 km north of the township, previously belonging to Joe Millar.

In later years Sam and family shifted to Williams Road in the house previously occupied by Jack Whyte.

For quite a number of years, Sam was a well-known pig buyer for Huttons in Palmerston North. Mrs Gladys Batchelor has recently been quoted as saying that although times were tough for her parents raising such a large family, they were all very well brought up, attending the Anglican Church and Sunday School as well as Tokomaru School.
